Bible Verses on Hypocrisy


Hypocrisy happens everywhere – not just in the secular world but also in the religious (Christian) world. hypocrisy is one of the things that Jesus Christ despises. He showed it  when He was doing His ministry  on this earth years ago. Often time He rebuked hypocrisy performed by many high religious leaders in his time and referred the religious leaders as hypocrites!

Like it or not we all can easily fall into hypocrisy   so we need to learn to be on our guard to avoid that trap.

The following is a collection of  Bible Verses, which are taken from New King James Version, about hypocrisy. The Bible verses can be used as reference for our learning. Please note that they are taken from their original context. For better understanding of each verse you may need to read the whole chapter respectively.

  1. Job 15:34
    For the company of hypocrites will be barren, And fire will consume the tents of bribery.
  2. Job 17:8
    Upright men are astonished at this, And the innocent stirs himself up against the hypocrite.
  3. Job 27:8-10
    For what is the hope of the hypocrite,
    Though he may gain much,
    If God takes away his life?
    Will God hear his cry
    When trouble comes upon him?
    Will he delight himself in the Almighty?
    Will he always call on God?
  4. Job 34:30
    Lest the people be ensnared.That the hypocrite should not reign,
  5. Job 36:13-14
    But the hypocrites in heart store up wrath; They do not cry for help when He binds them. They die in youth, And their life ends among the perverted persons.
  6. Psalm 26:4
    I have not sat with idolatrous mortals, Nor will I go in with hypocrites.
  7. Psalms 52:4
    You love all devouring words, You deceitful tongue.
  8. Proverbs 11:9
    The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered.
  9. Proverbs 26:23-26
    Fervent lips with a wicked heart Are like earthenware covered with silver dross. He who hates, disguises it with his lips, And lays up deceit within himself; When he speaks kindly, do not believe him, For there are seven abominations in his heart; Though his hatred is covered by deceit, His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly.
  10. Jeremiah 9:8
    Their tongue is an arrow shot out; It speaks deceit; One speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, But in his heart he lies in wait.

    The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?

    Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
  17. Matthew 16:3
    and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.

  29. Luke 18:11
    The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.
  30. Luke 20:46-47
    Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, 47 who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.
  31. 1 Timothy 4:2
    speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,

    Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking,  as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
  33. 1 John 2:4
    He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
  34. 1 John 2:9
    He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now.
  35. 1 John 4:20
    If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?

  1. Great word study. God seeks obedience rather than works of the law. Much of Jesus’ words against hypocrisy were directed toward the religious elite who feared and worshiped the law, the created thing, rather than God, the Creator. The law has no power, except to spell out justice and none of us wants that. God is powerful, all powerful, and to know and fear and obey Him is where true power comes from and is displayed.
